The formula

Conversion rate = (Conversions ÷ Clicks) × 100
  • Conversion rate is where media buying meets the website.
  • Targeting, creative and bidding only decide who arrives.
  • What happens after the click is a different discipline – and usually the cheaper one to fix, because a landing page change applies to every click you have already paid for.

Value per click

Value per click = Conversion rate × Value per conversion

This is the most useful figure on the page. It converts a percentage into money and puts it on the same scale as CPC.

If value per click is $7.17 and your CPC is $2.12, every click is worth more than three times what it costs and you should be buying more of them. If value per click is $1.40 and CPC is $2.12, the account loses money on every click and no bidding strategy repairs that.

Typical conversion rates

TypeTypical CVR
Ecommerce, all traffic1.5–3.5%
Ecommerce, paid search non-brand1–2.5%
Lead gen, form fill3–10%
Local services, phone call8–25%
B2B SaaS trial signup2–7%
Local emergency services sit far above everything else because intent is at its highest – somebody locked out of their house is not comparison shopping.

Before you trust the number

Conversion rates are only as good as the tracking beneath them.

Conversion rates are only as good as the tracking beneath them. Four things distort them routinely: duplicate tags firing twice, counting every funnel step as a conversion, consent-blocked events under GDPR-style regimes, and cross-device journeys attributed to the wrong session.

If a rate looks impossibly good or impossibly bad, audit the measurement before you change the campaign. Rebuilding a broken conversion setup routinely produces bigger gains than months of bid optimisation, because everything downstream was optimising toward the wrong signal.

Frequently asked

Divide conversions by clicks or sessions and multiply by 100. 47 conversions from 1,180 clicks is a 3.98 percent conversion rate.
Ecommerce typically runs 1.5–3.5 percent. Lead generation forms run 3–10 percent. Local emergency services can exceed 20 percent because intent is so high.
Clicks for platform reporting, sessions for analytics. They differ – some clicks never load the page – so pick one and stay consistent rather than mixing them.
