Engagement rate calculator

Three ways to measure engagement rate – and why the one you pick changes the answer.
In one line

Work out engagement rate by reach, by impressions or by followers, and see how the three differ and which to report.

ER by reach = (Engagements ÷ Reach) × 100
Likes, comments, shares, saves.

By followers-
Engagements per 1,000 reached-
Engagement by reach is the fairest measure. By followers is the one agencies quote, because it flatters small accounts.

Three formulas, three different numbers

ER by reach = (Engagements ÷ Reach) × 100

ER by impressions = (Engagements ÷ Impressions) × 100
ER by followers = (Engagements ÷ Followers) × 100
The same post can show 5.9 percent, 3.9 percent or 8.8 percent depending on which denominator you choose. None is wrong; quoting one without saying which is.

Which one to use

By reach is the fairest. It asks: of the people who saw this, how many responded. It is unaffected by follower count and by how many times the algorithm re-served the post.

By impressions is always the lowest of the three, because impressions exceed reach. Useful for comparing paid placements, where repetition is bought deliberately.

By followers is the one that appears in pitch decks. It flatters small accounts – a 2,000-follower account whose post reaches 8,000 people can post a 20 percent engagement rate that means nothing about how engaging the content was.

Typical engagement rates by reach

PlatformTypical ER by reach
Instagram feed3–7%
Instagram Reels4–9%
TikTok5–12%
LinkedIn2–5%
Facebook page1–4%
X0.5–2%
Rates fall as accounts grow, on every platform. A 50,000-follower account holding the same engagement rate as a 5,000-follower one is doing something unusual.

What engagement does not tell you

Engagement correlates with distribution, not with revenue.

Engagement correlates with distribution, not with revenue. Platforms use it to decide who else sees the post, which makes it a genuine input to reach – but a post can engage enormously and sell nothing.

Saves and shares are worth more than likes for both distribution and intent. If your platform breaks them out, weight them separately rather than dropping everything into one engagement total.

Frequently asked

Divide total engagements by reach and multiply by 100 for the fairest measure. Dividing by followers or impressions gives different, also-valid figures – state which one you used.
By reach, Instagram feed posts typically run 3–7 percent, TikTok 5–12 percent, LinkedIn 2–5 percent. Rates decline as follower count rises.
Reach. It measures how many of the people who saw the post responded, and is not distorted by follower count.
